There is a particular pleasure in settling into a baseball game when the stakes fit in one sentence. Win twice and move on. Lose twice and the season is over.

That is the Wild Card round. Our advice: pick a series to follow, not just a score to check. A short series gives every game a different job, and watching that change is part of the fun.

Four starting points

MLB’s September 29, 2026 schedule opens four series: Phillies at Braves, White Sox at Astros, Red Sox at Yankees, and Cubs at Padres. Each begins with Game 1 of a best-of-three. That is the opening slate, not a prediction about who survives it. See MLB’s dated schedule.

Start with your team if you have one. If you do not, choose a matchup you can actually sit with. There is no prize for spending the whole evening looking for the next game while missing the one already on.

What changes after the first game

At 0–0, either club can still absorb a loss. At 1–0, the next game can end the series. At 1–1, the next game has to end it. A sweep means there is no Game 3.

That is why a third game on a schedule is a possibility to keep in mind, not an appointment to treat as settled. Follow the series result before arranging an evening around an if-needed listing.

We think Game 2 deserves special attention. It carries two stories at once: one club trying to finish the job, the other trying to earn another day. You do not need a prediction to appreciate that.

Take a moment to open your viewing app and check the account you are using. A familiar channel name does not, by itself, tell you what your subscription includes. Read the details beside the watch option before treating a sign-in screen as a reason to buy something else.

Then put the setup work away. Follow the count. Notice the decision to leave a pitcher in or go get him. Have an opinion about it. That is a much better use of a playoff evening than another round of password resets.
